For many years computer chess was seen as the touchstone for true AI. It was assumed that the sheer complexity of the game would mean that only human players could competer at the highest level. It was thus a major watershed for AI when in 1996 the IBM chess computer Deep Blue defeated the chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov.
